Raw material for new PET bottles is produced in the Müllendorf plant from used PET bottles. This targeted ecological recycling represents a leading project for the domestic beverage industry. Laying of the foundation stone for Austria’s first and only bottle-to-bottle recycling plant for the beverage industry took place 365 days ago in Müllendorf in Burgenland province and the plant is now in operation. New PET bottles are produced from used PET bottles, closing material cycles. The leading companies in the Austrian beverage industry now have their own influence over sensible use of material resources, as well as the highest level of quality in beverage packaging. The plant is operated by the company PET to PET Recycling Österreich GmbH, in which the companies Coca-Cola Beverages Österreich, Radlberger Getränke, Rauch Fruchtsäfte, Spitz und Vöslauer have holdings. Euro 16.2 million has been invested in this project within one year, 35 jobs created at the site and special attention paid to ecological criteria. Around 80% of the waste water, for example, is treated and returned to the process in a highest quality level. Following a record period of construction, installation of the technical plant took place in two stages: the first part – the washing process – went into operation in March and the second part, the URRC (United Resource Recovery Corp) recycling process, in June. The entire plant started up after corresponding trial runs and extensive quality tests. The degree of addition of recycled PET to the new bottles presently amounts to between 20 and 30%. The collected PET beverage bottles required for recycling are received by PET to PET Recycling Österreich GmbH from ARA-System (part of Österreichische Kunststoff Kreislauf AG – an industry recycling company of Altstoff Recycling Austria). An annual amount of 10,000 tonnes for bottle-to-bottle recycling has been ensured for the beverage industry through a tender. The processed material is available to all companies in the beverage industry that fulfil the requirements of the sustainability agenda, at the percentage requirement in the market (according to ARA statistics). The beverage industry therefore takes into account the sustainability agenda signed jointly in Autumn 2004 by the food ministry, chamber of commerce, and the waster industry, that provides, among others, for targeted ecological recycling of PET bottles in Austria. The plant additionally possesses further processing capacity for up to another 10,000 tonnes, with which, for example, material purchases in the free market can be covered. “Bottle-to-bottle recycling is a solution pointing towards the future. Due to the most modern technology, resources are saved in Müllendorf and valuable raw materials recycled. That is an important contribution for sustainable waste business in Austria that also enjoys the highest international recognition”, says Environment Minister Josef Pröll. The head of the provincial government, Hans Niessl is “proud of the opening of one of the most modern recycling operations in within the whole of Europe and that this company is located in Burgenland. It proves how attractive our business region is for national and international investors. And it furthermore underlines that innovative environmental technologies play an important role in the future strategy of the province”. For Renate Römer, Vice President of the Austrian chamber of commerce, it is “unique that leading companies that are in competition in the Austrian market have come together in order to make an important ecological contribution. This Austrian joint project is a magnificent example of efficient co-operation in terms of the sustainability agenda”. Christian Strasser, Managing Director of PET to PET Recycling Österreich GmbH, would like that the company “becomes established as an exemplary operation not only in Austria, but also throughout Europe” and is pleased “that we have managed to install and start up a highly modern PET bottle recycling plant within just one year. Our top objective is presently to produce 6,000 tonnes of PET recyclate in Müllendorf for introduction into new bottle production, thereby fulfilling the prescribed aims of the sustainability agenda”.
